Sir Herbert Samuel, famed British statesman and first High Commissioner of Palestine, yesterday pleaded the cause of the Hebrew University at Jerusalem as the haven of refuge for German-Jewish scientists and men of learning ousted from their posts in Germany by the Nazis. Speaking at a luncheon arranged in his honor here, Sir Herbert declared that directors of the university, although confronted with the need of providing facilities for these ousted men, had been forced to cut the institution’s budget from 250,000 pounds to 130,000 pounds.
Funds are urgently needed, he declared as he revealed his intention of touring the principal cities of the United States in behalf of the university. Five thousand dollars was contributed for the university here following the meeting.
