A decision to launch the Israel United Appeal in South Africa this month was reached here today at a meeting of the South African Zionist Council, in which all Zionist organizations in this country are represented. One hundred and twenty delegates from various parts of the Union and Rhodesia are attending the parley.
An extensive debate took place on the question of whether elections should be held for South African delegates to the forth-coming World Zionist Congress, scheduled for December in Jerusalem, or whether an agreed-upon list should be selected by the various parties involved. The latter position was supported by Bernard Gering, president of the S.A. Zionist Federation, who insisted that Israel’s domestic and foreign policy should not be made an issue by any Zionist party outside the Jewish state.
It was decided to appoint a committee to look into the question further and to find out whether an overall agreement could be reached. The committee was instructed that if elections are held the date for them should not be earlier than September 10 and an agreement should be sought among the various parties to avoid any display of partisan bitterness at public meetings.
