Some 35,000 fans — a drop of 10,000 from the average crowd — attended a soccer match between Spain and Israel at the Ramat Gan Stadium, despite security concerns caused by a recent wave of suicide bombings. The 1-1 tie in a game that had some spectacular saves by Israeli goalie Nir Davidovich improved Israel’s chances of advancing to the 2002 World Cup, to be held in Japan.
