A resolution banning synagogue facilities to weddings or Bar Mitzvahs that are followed by social functions where non-kosher food is served was adopted here by the Metropolitan Young Israel Council, comprising four Young Israel branches here.
Based on the contention that the wedding or Bar Mitzvah ceremony solemnized in the synagogue is only the introduction to the religious observance of a vital phase of Jewish living, the sanctioning of its celebration by a non-kosher meal makes a travesty of the synagogue celebration, it was stated by the Young Israel Council. For this reason the Young Israel synagogues have gone on record that they “can no longer be party to this practice. They will reserve the right to cancel any future scheduled arrangements already accepted if they find that non-kosher dinners are to follow.”
