The chairman of Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial censured Hebron settlers who abuse Palestinians. Yosef “Tommy” Lapid, a Holocaust survivor and former Israeli justice minister, wrote in a newspaper column this week that television footage showing some Hebron Jews harassing their Arab neighbors reminded him of anti-Semites he encountered in prewar Europe. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has set up a Cabinet committee to look into ways of stepping up law enforcement among Hebron’s 500 settlers, who live near an overwhelmingly hostile Palestinian population.
