The first payments were made from a historic 1998 settlement in which Swiss banks agreed to pay $1.25 billion to settle all claims surrounding Switzerland’s handling of Holocaust victims’ assets. The Claims Conference began making payments to 35,000 Jewish slave laborers in 36 countries, with each survivor receiving $1,000. The payments are in addition to those being made by a nearly $5 billion German slave-labor fund.
