The Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society won consultative status at the United Nations. The Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations, a body of the U.N. Economic and Social Council, decided Monday to accept HIAS as an accredited NGO.

“Today, HIAS has achieved an important milestone for our organization and for refugees around the world,” said Gideon Aronoff, the HIAS president and CEO. “With millions of displaced persons worldwide, it is important for HIAS — which has nearly 130 years of experience in refugee care, immigration and resettlement — to offer our expertise and perspective to ECOSOC.” Founded in 1881 to aid Jewish resettlement in the United States, HIAS has grown into an international agency advocating on behalf of immigrants.
