Ladislaus Vannay, the leader of the recent Hungarian putsch attempt, was sentenced to-day by the military court here to six months’ imprisonment and degradation for his part in the affair. The others arrested in connection with the attempt will be tried before the civil court.
Although the leaders have denied it, the putsch attempt was designed also as a move against the Jews, whose property was to be confiscated if it was successful. Vannay is an active member of the antisemitic terrorist organisation, and at one time came into prominence by insulting the late Dr. Wilhelm V Vaszonyi, one of the leaders of Hungarian Jewry, who was a former Minister of Justice.
One of the leaders of the putsch movement, Arpad Raad, when questioned during the trial by the president of the court on the anti-Jewish character of the movement declared: It is absolutely untrue. We never spoke about anti-Jewish activities. The allegation that our movement had antisemitic tendencies is incorrect.
