The Jewish Agency for Palestine today telegraphed the royal family, the premier of the kingdom of Iraq and the people of Iraq expressing the condolences of the Jewish people at the death of King Feisal. A telegram expressing the “profound sympathies” of the Jews was also dispatched to Emir Abdullah of Transjordania, elder brother of Feisal.
A telegram of condolence was also sent to the premier at Bagdad by the Vaad Leumi of Palestine (Jewish National Council).
Third son of the Sheriff of Mecca and Ruler of the Hejaz, Feisal came into prominence during the World War when, with “Lawrence of Arabia”, he organized the Arab revolt against their Turkish rulers. The Paris Peace Conference failed to give him the Arab throne which he claimed had been promised him for his services in behalf of the Allies, and he returned to Damascus and proclaimed himself king of Syria.
