The Mossad chief’s tenure has been extended.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced Sunday he is keeping Meir Dagan has head of the overseas intelligence service for an additional year.
It was the second such extension for Dagan, who assumed control of the Mossad in 2002 with orders to take the fight to the Jewish state’s enemies abroad.
“Meir Dagan is doing his job with exceptional success and the list of Mossad’s achievements over the last six years is most impressive,” Olmert told his Cabinet at its weekly meeting.
“There is no doubt that Mossad’s activities are gaining momentum,” he said, without elaborating.
Dagan, a son of Holocaust survivors from Russia and retired army general, is credited with locating the secret Syrian nuclear reactor which Israel bombed last September. Mossad is similarly key to monitoring Iran’s atomic ambitions.
Many in the Arab world believe Mossad was behind the killing of several Arab terrorists in neighboring states recently. The most salient of these was Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyeh, who died in a Damascus car-bombing on Feb. 12.
