The Portuguese president and Israel’s chief rabbi are among those expected to attend the 100th anniversary of a synagogue in Lisbon. President Jorge Sampaio, whose maternal grandmother was a local Jewish activist, and Israel’s chief Sephardi Rabbi, Shlomo Moshe Amar, will join several Jewish and non-Jewish officials at the Sept. 9 celebration of the 100-year anniversary of Shaare-Tikva, also known as Lisbon Synagogue, the first synagogue built in Portugal after the 1497 expulsion of the Jews.
