The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations says the recent intelligence report on Iran has made his job harder.
Zhalmay Khalilzad, in remarks Thursday to the Union for Reform Judaism biennial in San Diego, said the National Intelligence Estimate has made it more difficult for the United States to push for new and tougher sanctions against Iran.
The intelligence report, which claims that Iran suspended its nuclear weapons program in 2003, has created concern in the Jewish community that the United States will take a softer line on Iran.
“The NIE has not helped,” Khalilzad said by video hookup. “We did score a goal against ourselves on that.”
Khalilzad said he nevertheless expects a U.N. resolution on Iran by the end of January or early February at the latest.
