The U.S. assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs is planning to discuss reviving Israeli-Syrian negotiations during a meeting Sunday in Damascus with Syrian President Hafez Assad. Martin Indyk will not be visiting Israel during his Mideast trip. American officials would routinely make a stopover in Israel during such trips, but observers say this has changed during the tenure of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is perceived in Washington as reluctant to advance the peace process.
