The U.S. is not trying to help Mahmoud Abbas fight Hamas by sending him military assistance, an official said. “That’s certainly not our intent,” State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said when asked if the non-lethal military aid the United States is currently considering for the Palestinian Authority president, a relative moderate, is intended to shore him up in increasingly lethal battles between Hamas, an Islamist terrorist group, and members of Abbas’ Fatah movement.
