The United States wants Egypt to assume control of both sides of its border with Gaza after Israel withdraws from the area. Israel plans to continue patrolling the “Philadelphi Strip” along the border, even after withdrawing from the Gaza Strip sometime next year, to prevent Palestinian weapons smuggling.
