The Vatican defended a planned meeting later this month between Pope John Paul II and an Austrian politician who has praised Hitler and members of the Nazi SS. “The Holy See is open to everyone. No one should be surprised by that,” Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano said. Israel, Jewish groups and Italian leftists have called on the pope to cancel the Dec. 16 meeting with Jorg Haider.
