A new onslaught on Jewish trade and commerce in the Reich was unleashed this week when, despite the earnest efforts of Minister of Economics Schmitt, the Nazi press in all parts of the country launched into a “Don’t Buy from Jews” editorial campaign. Jewish merchants were enjoined from dealing in Christmas merchandise or from making any attempts to obtain any of the Christmas holiday business. Although the Ministry of Economics repeated its warnings against a boycott of the Jews, the government-controlled radio system announced that announcements and advertisements of Jewish concerns would not be accepted and most of the newspapers of the country refused to accept Jewish advertising.
The boycott of Nazi Germany will be to blame if the Reich defaults her external obligations, Dr. Hjalmar Schacht warned. He attacked Jews for their share in the boycott. The Nazi press went him one better by declaring the Jews were forcing Germany to default. Holders of German obligations here and in London were skeptical. Diversion of foreign credit balances to buy up Reich obligations on a depressed market, they declared, would be the cause of any default in interest and dividend payments.
The Ministry of Education reported that the process of eliminating Jews from the school system of Prussia had been completed. . . . The so-called Aryan clause was revoked in the German Protestant Church in an apparent victory for the moderate elements. It will return, it was revealed, however, in another form—as a strict numerus clausus for non-Aryans, practically barring them from the opportunity of preparing for church posts.
The German government was confronted with another demand by Czecho-slovakia for information on the fate of scores of Czechoslovakian citizens (mostly Jews) who had disappeared in the wave of Nazi raids last Spring and Summer. Pointing out the complete disregard ###f previous requests for this information, Prague threatened to make public the names of those missing ###d as much of the circumstances surrounding each case as is known.

The indefatigable Josiah Wedge-wood hurled a series of interpellations at Colonial Secretary Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister regarding aspects of the Palestine Jewish situation. Sir Philip said he knew nothing of consideration by the Palestine government of a plan to restrict Jewish doctors and dentists there. The information had been revealed in Palestine by Deputy Health Director Harkness who said there had been a great increase in the number of Jewish practitioners.
Sir Philip declined to justify the Transjordan immigration policy declaring that unrestricted immigration of Transjordan Arabs into Palestine had been made part of the Palestine law.
Edward Doran, disavowed by his Conservative constituency for his libels against the Jews, was ridiculed into silence when he attempted to charge Britain’s Jews with being “economic vultures picking on British flesh.”
Sixty parliamentarians attended the Pro-Palestine Committee meeting at the House of Commons and heard Col. John Buchan, Wedge-wood and Professor Selig Brodetsky on developments in Palestine. An attempt was made by anti-Zionist members to swing the powerful House Imperial Committee into an anti-Zionist stand.
Possibilities of settlement of German Jews in Argentine were disclosed at a meeting of the Jewish Colonization Association in London when Sir Leonard Cohen announced that over 500,000 acres of land suitable for agriculture, had been acquired by the organization and were available for thousands of families.
HUNGARY
The agreement between the anti-Semitic student demonstrators and the government, in which the latter agreed to practically all the student demands in exchange for a pledge of peace, was thrown into the discard almost before it took effect as the students, lending themselves to Hungarian Nazi strategy, tried to force Dictator Goemboes into the unpopular role of defender of the Jews. Rioting was reported at the University of Budapest, where several colleges had to be closed down, and in every university town of the country.
The Nazi movement received added impetus when the wealthy Count Alexander Festetic, former Goemboes supporter, renounced his allegiance and declared he would work heart and soul for a Hungarian Nazi movement based on anti-Semitism.
AUSTRIA
Demands for a settlement of the “Jewish question” were renewed last week by clerical leaders of the predominant faction, foreshadowing the enactment soon of a law limiting the activities of Jews in all spheres of life by a strict numerus clausus.
Events in Austria continued to move in the direction of a Dollfuss-Fascist government differing not greatly from the Nazi model in Germany and challenging the status of the Jews of the country.
ROUMANIA
The Jews of Roumania breathed easier in the week just concluded as the Duca government, its patience lost, outlawed the notorious Iron Guard, leader in all major anti-Semitic attacks here in recent months. As the election nears, the Union of Roumanian Jews and the Jewish party find themselves not in close accord on procedure. The latter party, through Deputy Michael Landau, complained to the government that police were interfering with the filing of its election slates.
UNITED STATES
The American Jewish Committee, in annual meeting, warned that the situation of Jews in Germany still remains precarious and pointed out that the German Jewish question is rightfully a matter of international concern. The committee reaffirmed its stand with regard to the boycott and called on enlightened world opinion to combat the Nazi menace to civilization.
The New York Federal Grand Jury investigating Nazi activities completed its term and was discharged. Congressman Samuel Dickstein and his inquiry committee completed their preliminary probe into propaganda activities and are ready to ask the House of Representatives for a thorough investigation.
Ambassador Hans Luther described Germany’s love of peace to an openly skeptical audience from which police had to remove many vociferous interrupters. He spoke at Columbia University over the protest of liberal members of the faculty and student body, who attempted a demonstration. Luther and President Nicholas Murray Butler were editorially spanked for their performance by the New York Evening Post, which is now published by J. David Stern. The New York Sun explained editorially, for Dr. Luther’s edification, why his audience laughed at him.
The anti-Nazi boycott received testimonials of support from 2,000 doctors, dentists and pharmacists at a meeting in New York and from the Idaho State Grange, powerful organization of farmers.
