Three of the candidates for New York mayor joined Nobel Prize winner Elie Wiesel and American Jewish leaders in criticizing the United Nations World Conference Against Racism and applauding the decision by U.S. and Israeli delegates to walk out of the forum. A week before the Sept. 11 primary election, Democrats Alan Hevesi and Mark Green and Republican Michael Bloomberg condemned the conference as having gone against its original mandate by discussing proposals that denigrate Zionism as racism.
