The first three Rothschild prizes, awarded annually for outstanding research, were awarded today to Israeli scientists and an economic periodical for outstanding research in various fields. The 5,000 pound prizes were presented by Minister of Education Zalman Aranne at a ceremony at the grave of the late Baron Edmond de Rothschild at Zichron Yacov. The funds are provided by the Palestine Jewish Colonization Association.
Dr. Shmuel Duvdevani received his prize for the development of a dew gauge and other research which established that agriculture could be introduced to arid areas if the dew precipitation is great enough. Dr. M. van der Hoeden received a prize for veterinary research on epidemic leptospirosia, a disease which attacks animals and human beings. The third prize went to “Economic Quarterly.”
