The newspaper Het Volk reported tonight that Fritz Thyssen, German steel magnate who has taken refuge in Switzerland, had resigned all his public offices as a sign of protest against anti-Jewish excesses instituted in Germany last November following the assassination of a German Embassy official in Paris.
The newspaper said that Thyssen fled to Switzerland in fear that an unexplained summons to Berlin meant imprisonment or worse. Several months ago, the report said, he reveived an “invitation” to attend a meeting of the Council of State in Berlin. Believing the call portended trouble, he pretended he had made a business trip and left Germany for good, the newspaper explained.
