Tiberias, ancient capital of Lower Galilee, was today in the grip of severe anti-Jewish disorders that have been increasing in intensity for the past three days.
Organized Arab attacks on Jews are spreading from the city limits into the surrounding agricultural hinterland.
This morning hundreds of Arabs stoned Jewish homes and passersby, smashed windows and doors. They set fire to and destroyed two Jewish shops. Arab police, instead of arresting the assailants, seized two Jews who had defended themselves from attack.
Hundreds of Jews are fleeing from the old city section, where tension is at its highest.
The attacks started Monday with an attempted invasion by an Arab mob of the Jewish quarter, during celebration of the hundredth day of the general strike against Jewish immigration. The invasion was checked by police and troops after clashes lasting hours, with two Jews and twelve Arabs wounded.
(Tiberias has a Jewish population of 5,300 as against 2,600 Moslems. It has a Jewish mayor.)
Yesterday’s Arab death toll in the battles with British troops and police around Nablus and Bela was today officially put at 16.
Haaretz, Hebrew daily, estimates at $250,000 the loss in the fire that destroyed a lumber yard on the outskirts of Tel Aviv.
