A seven-man Trans-Jordan delegation to the Rhodes ###istice talks arrived today on the Greek island, a report from Rhodes stated. The delegation, which includes two civilian aides, met informally with U.N. acting media-### Ralphe J. Bunche and his chief of staff, Gen. William E. RileyThe Transjordanians are slated to meet with Dr. Bunche tonight to outline King Abdullah’s demands. It is almost certain that the Trans Jordan delegation will not present Iraq, despite previous statements to this effect by Iraqi spokesmen and Abolish. The Israeli delegation is due to speak with Dr. Bunche tomorrow, after which ##y will draw up a tentative agenda for the parley which is expected to get under ##y Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the members of the Israeli delegation which will meet with Lebanese representatives at the border town of Ras el Nakura for armistice negotiations starting tomorrow have been named. Lebanese Junior officers have already arrived at the town and have begun to make arrangements for the talk’s, which will be held in a fortress-like police station inside Israeli territory.
The evacuation of the Faluja pocket was completed this afternoon, after which U.N. officer formally turned over the area to Israeli officers. Besides the Egyptian garrison, some 1,000 Arab civilians left for Gaza, Others, who wished to go to Hebron, could not be cleared since permission was not forthcoming from the Tran Jordanians who hold that city. About 500 Arab civilians remain in the town.
The first meeting of the Israeli-Egyptian armistice commission will be held at Auja el Hafir, in the demilitarized zone, Wednesday, it was learned today. The body, composed of three Arabs and three Jews and presided over by Gen. Riley, will meet in secret.
An exchange of correspondence between U.N. Secretary-General Trygve Lie and Israeli Foreign Minister Moahe Shertok over the signing of the Israeli-Egyptian armistice pact was released here. Lie declared that “in reaching the agreement you and your government have significantly contributed to the cause of international peace.” In his reply Shertok praised Lie’s role in the Middle Eastern peace campaign and expressed the hope that “our joint peace efforts will be crowned with complete success.”
