As an “accessory to murder, ” Heinrich Emde, a former SS man and assistant block leader in Buchenwald concentration camp, was given eight years in jail by a Kassel court. Witnesses testified that he shot 21 Jews in the camp’s stables.
For numerous savage beatings he had administered in Buchenwald concentration camp, Joseph Tannenbaum–himself an inmate promoted to the rank of “kapo,” or trusty, by the SS–was sentenced to a five-year penitentiary term by the Nuremberg Court of Assizes. He was also charged with contributing to the killing of Jewish prisoners.
The former Nazi mayor of Altona, Emil Brix, was fined the equivalent of $70 for telling a Nazi victim what a pity it was that he had not been gassed in the days of the Third Reich.
