A judgment against Leon Phillips, president of S. Phillips & Son, 500 Seventh Avenue, New York, was granted in Municipal Court, Part Two, by Judge Myron Sulzberger to the United Jewish Campaign on account of a pledge for $500 which the defendant signed during the drive in May 1926.
Jonah J. Goldstein of Goldstein & Goldstein, vice-chairman of the United Jewish Campaign Committee, appeared on behalf of the plaintiffs, and the defendant was represented by Levy, Kraus & Lehman of 551 Fifth Avenue.
The defense submitted was that the defendant thought he was subscribing to the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies. It was found that he had never made a payment or pledge to the Federation.
The United Jewish Campaign is the agency through which the Joint Distribution Committee raises funds in this country for the reconstructive relief of the impoverished Jews of Eastern Europe and Palestine. In a drive in this city in 1926, for $6,000,000, subscriptions were obtained from 40,000 contributors on which $5,700,000 has already been paid.
