The United Nations Economic and Social Council decided today to query the various member and non-member governments of all countries on their views concerning a proposal for a world calendar reform and to have a report on these views presented at next year’s regular session of the Council. A proposal by Pakistan and Chile to pigeonhole the matter indefinitely was defeated.

Jews and other Sabbath observers have voiced serious objections to the proposal before the Council, sponsored by India, because it is based on a scheme which would unfix the position of the Sabbath in the week. This would interfere with the economic, social and religious activities of Sabbath observers, it was pointed out.
