Dissatisfied with the slow pace evident here in regard to the proposed covenants on human rights, a number of delegations today started a move to keep the General Assembly in session after the scheduled closing date of December 12 so as to get more work done on human rights.
The two draft covenants on human rights have been debated on and off by the Assembly’s Social Cultural and Humanitarian Committee since 1954. This year so far the Committee has devoted 29 sessions to the subject and has approved five articles in one of the two proposed covenants–the one dealing with political and civil rights. Last year several articles were approved in the draft covenant on social and cultural rights.
Meanwhile, the committee today heard Dr. Eliezer Yapou of Israel detail a report about the press and other publications in Israel.
