The Near East should receive high priority in the United Nations program of technical assistance to underdeveloped areas, U.N. Secretary-General Trygve Lie declared here tonight at the University of Chattanooga.
Mr. Lie stated that the “time has come when the members of the United Nations should do something” about developing regional and national projects for the Jordan Valley and other areas of the Near East. Turning to Israel, he asserted that the interests of the new state “coincide in respect to economic development with the interests of the neighbors with whom peace in Palestine and in the whole Wear East, he stated, possible political settlement alone.
Holding up the Tennessee Valley authority as an example of “boldness and imaginative planning, “Mr. Lie insisted that such development in the near East would improve living conditions and “provide the necessary economic and social basis for the full reconciliation in the area of Moslem, Jew and Christian, of Israeli and Arab.”
