The Canadian Defense Department announced yesterday that it was reducing the number of Canadian troops serving with the United Nations Emergency Force on the Egyptian-Israeli border and ending Canada’s reconnaissance duties for UNEF.
The announcement followed U.N. plans to reduce UNEF from 7,000 to about 4,000 troops after a report to U.N. Secretary General U Thant by a U.N. survey team he sent to Egypt last year. About 900 Canadians are serving in UNEF.
