U.S. GOVERNMENT WILL BACK NEW U.N. TRUCE CHIEF FOR PALESTINE

A spokesman for the Department of State said today that the United States Government is satisfied that a man of the high calibre of Maj. Gen. Burns of Canada has been found to replace Maj. Gen. Bennike, as chief of the United Nations truce organization for Palestine. He emphasized that the United States will support Gen. Burns as fully as it has supported his predecessor.

The U. S. Government wishes to say, the spokesman said, that it is “very appreciative of the services Gen. Bennike has rendered in the course of his tour as United Nations chief of staff in Palestine.” It considers that, “under very trying circumstances,” Gen. Bennike “has contributed greatly to the maintenance of the armistice system in that troubled area.”
