Students in Israel’s higher institutions of learning will feel a shortage of textbooks when the winter term starts in two weeks as a result of the continued suspension of the American Information Media Guarantee program under which most of the required textbooks were imported from the United States.
The last import contracts expired in August and no new contracts have been signed pending agreement between the United States and Israel on the question of counterpart funds A State Department official arrived here last week to discuss the question with Israel authorities, but the talks have not yet been completed.
Under the International Media Guarantee program, Israel purchasers of books paid for them in Israel currency which was placed to the credit of the United States Government The United States paid out the counterpart dollars to the American exporters of the books.
