Leaders of the American Federation of Labor. C.I.O., and Railroad Brotherhoods, at a conference here addressed by Don Pines, coeditor of the Palestine labor daily “Davar,” today cabled British Foreign Minister Ernest Bevin that the American labor movement “is vitally concerned about the crises in Palestine and urges immediate and just disposition of the matter.”
“We protest the proposed initiation of repressive measures against Palestine Jewry and its labor movement,” the cable said. “British and American labor must maintain its dignity and world leadership by its support of the Histadruth in Palestine.” The conference suggested that the national exscutives of the AFL, CIO, and Railroad Brotherhoods send a labor delegation to Palestine as an expression of their solidarity with the Histadruth.
A joint appeal to Bevin urging the opening of Palestine for displaced Jews was also cabled today by Mayor Hubert Humphrey of Minneapolis, Mayor John McDcnough of St. Paul, Charles Turck, president of Macalester College, Bernhard Christiansen, president of Augsburg College, and other civic leaders of the twin cities. “Individually, and as Christian leaders, we urge that Britain fulfill its obligations to the Jewish people at the earliest possible date,” the cable said. “We deeply resent the continued evasion of its Palestine responsibilities.
