The United States Government has been invited by the Government of Israel to participate in the first international exhibition and fair in Jerusalem at which achievements in all fields of land reclamation throughout the world will be surveyed and evaluated, it was revealed here today at a press conference by Arthur Lourie, Consul General of Israel in New York.
Various departments of the U.S. Government concerned with reclamation of desert and wastelands, agriculture, soil conservation, flood control and power development will show at the Jerusalem exhibition what they have done to advance the progress and welfare of the human race, Mr. Lourie said. Participating in the exhibition–which will be known as “Conquest of the Desert”–will also be various United Nations organizations and many of the 41 countries with which Israel maintains diplomatic and consular relations.
The exhibition will be held in the Jerusalem Convention Center from April 16 through May 18, 1953. It will be part of a celebration marking the 3,000th anniversary of the establishment of Jerusalem as the City of David. “In addition to exhibits by governments and public bodies, private industry will display the machinery, equipment and materials used in the conquest of the wilderness, “Mr. Lourie said. He pointed out that private firms representing 39 nations have already expressed their desire to participate.
Extra allocations of foreign exchange for the purchase of machinery to be imported for exhibition purposes will be given to essential industries by the Israel Government. “The aims of the exhibition are to dramatically underscore the achievements that have successfully conquered desert, swamp and erosion throughout the world, and thus to point the way mankind must go in its struggle for survival on the land,” Mr. Lourie said.
Sponsors of the exhibition are the Government of Israel, the Jewish Agency, the Keren Kayemeth, and the Palestine Jewish Colonization Association. Offices of the exhibition have been opened in New York, London, Paris, Rome, Brussels, Amsterdam, Zurich, Oslo, Stockholm, and Helsinki. A special emissary for the exhibition will visit Canada and South America to negotiate with the various governments and leading industries regarding their participation, Mr. Lourie said.
