Despite the economic difficulties under which the Israel Government is laboring at this time as a result of the influx of immigrants it will not “close the doors upon them for a single moment,” Aubrey S. Eban, Israel’s permanent delegate to the United Nations, today told a group of American Jewish communal leaders who will fly to Israel tomorrow night to discuss the present immigration crisis and the aid required of American Jews in 1950, through the United Jewish Appeal.
Speaking at reception for the group at the Israel Consulate, Mr. Eban reported that the 300,000th homeless Jew to be admitted to Israel since May 14, 1948, had arrived on an immigrant ship from Europe which docked at Haifa early this week. He described the record immigration program as “a notable achievement of rescue and rehabilitation that represents the highest example of cooperative effort between the people of Israel and the Jews of the United States.” However, he stressed, “our rejoicing in this momentous accomplishment is overshadowed by the critical situation in the immigrant reception camps where 85,000 newcomers must live under the most difficult conditions because of the lack of funds to give them a decent home.”
