Ukraine’s president proposed that his country’s heritage institute work with Yad Vashem.

Victor Yuschenko in a meeting Wednesday in Kiev with Avner Shalev, the chairman of Yad Vashem, emphasized that “Ukraine and Israel have common history” in presenting suggestions for cooperative efforts between Yad Vashem and the Ukrainian Institute of National Heritage on historical research, the president’s press service reported.

Yuschenko said the project should begin with the events of World War II.

“We have a grand national project dedicated to the tragedy of World War II, where there are many empty pages which wait to be written,” he said.

Yuschenko proposed that Yad Vashem officials visit Kiev’s Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War, dedicated to the years 1941-45.
