Talks have begun here on unification of all of Montreal’s major charity drives, and a committee is expected to be set up soon to work out the formal details; It was predicted today that the unification may come about within two years.
Alan Bronfman, incoming chairman of the Greater Montreal Combined Health Appeal, said he agrees that the charity campaigns should be united. They are the Federation of Catholic Charities, the Federation of French Charities, the United Red Feather Services, the Combined Health Appeal and Red Cross Campaign, and the Combined Jewish Appeal.
Quebec spokesmen, including Welfare Minister Rene Levesque, have complained that the Montreal business community gives much more to the English-speaking than to the French-language charities. Health Minister Eric Kierans has suggested that the charity campaigns unite with the aim of improving the cooperation among the city’s different groups.
