After nearly six weeks of informal discussion, the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine finally voted today in a closed meeting to visit the displaced persons camps. The vote was six to four, with one, Karel Lisicky of Czechoslovakia, abstaining.
Those voting against the step were Vladimir Simic of Yugoslavia, Dr. Arturo Garcia Salazar of Peru, Nasrollah Entezam of Iran and Sir Abdur Rahman of India. Today’s vote came after UNSCOP had heard the testimony of Arthur Altmeyer, executive secretary of the International Refugee Organization, and his assistant, Sorem Fonnerfeld. Altmeyer submitted a written statement and was questioned by committee members.
(A group of Jewish Agency representatives are en route to Geneva in connection with the UNSCOP sessions. One party headed by Moshe Shertok left Lydda airport in Palestine yesterday, directly for Geneva. Another group, including the Agency liaison officers with the inquiry committee, has been delayed in Cairo, but expects to leave there tonight.)
