Sixty-nine tombstones in the Congregation Hadrath Israel Cematery near here were overturned by unknown vandals, it was reported by the Jewish Community Council of Metropolitan Boston and the Anti-Defamation League here. Six of the monuments were completely smashed and observers believe the vandalism was the work of grown men rather than youths.
Police in Melrose, who are conducting an investigation, say that the desecration is one of the most serious cases ever brought to their attention. A statement isued by the Congregation compared the desecration with the “inhuman acts of Nazi bestiality.”
