A donation by the Prince of Wales to the campaign for £20,000 to support activities of the Brady Associated Clubs in Whitechapel was announced.
The gift, size of which was not mentioned, was revealed at a dinner in the Savoy Hotel by Viscountess Bearsted, who presided at the affair in place of her husband, Lord Bearsted, and read a speech prepared by him. Illness prevented Lord Bearsted from appearing.
The Bearsted speech lauded the Jewish organization as performing “a real constructive work. It is a fine endeavor to instill into young lives the meaning of citizenship and cooperation.”
“I speak to an audience of mostly Jews and Jewesses,” Lady Bearsted went on. “Our position today is difficult. Not by noisy demonstrations, not by bitter words in the press, but by our lives and by the influence we have on those among whom we live we can show that we are a worthy people and a worthy race. I beg you to give generously so that the young people become worthy Jews and worthy citizens of our lovable country that we all want to serve.”
H. A. L. Fisher, Warden of New College, Oxford, and former president of the Board of Education, accepted Lord Bearsted’s invitation to support the club’s campaign.
