The people of the world seem less desirous of having the Jews for Allies than they were in 1917, Dr. Chaim Weismann charged yesterday, addressing a meeting marking the 26th anniversary of the issuance of the Balfour Declaration. The Zionist leader said that “enemy propaganda has made inroads in even the most unexpected quarters,” but expressed confidence that Prime Minister Churchill, President Roosevelt and other democratic statesmen will “end the sufferings of the Jews and establish them permanently in Palestine.” Such a move would also further Arab independence, Dr. Weizmann added.
He declared further that “all our disasters are due to homelessness. This cannot continue if the promises of a better world are sincere.” Viscount Cevil, former head of the British League of Nation Union and a one-time winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, also stated that the ” Jewish question” will not be solved ” until it is rid of statelessness.” Other speakers who also stressed the necessity for the creation of a permanent Jewish homeland in Palestine were Col. Walter Elliot, Conservative M. P., and Sir Percy Harris, Liberal M. P. Sir Percy expressed the hope that ” a place will be found at the peace table for Dr. Weizmann in order that the Jewish problem may not be forgotten.”
