An unusual gathering of Jewish and Gentile women took place under the auspices of the women’s division of the American Jewish Congress on Thursday at the home of Adolph Lewisohn. Mrs. Stephen Wise, who presided, had invited several of her well-informed friends to address the group on the subject of Nazi activity here and abroad.
Striking contrasts were provided by the attitudes of the speakers. Incendiarism on the part of Miriam Beard, a calm and scientific analysis by those calm and scientific males, Professor Horace Kallen and the Reverend Everett Clinchy, and a good, common sense exhortation by maternal Carrie Chapman Catt, all culminated in an impassioned appeal for cooperation from Mrs. Richard Gottheil.
The latter’s suggestion that a petition of protest be drawn up and sent to President Roosevelt was acted upon. Mrs. Wise will announce the committee to draw up the document at the next meeting of the division.
SHIPBOARD SUPPER DANCE
The Women’s League for Palestine will close its year’s activities with a supper dance aboard the Ile de France next Thursday evening. Mrs. I. Aarons heads the committee on arrangements for the event, assisted by Mmes. William Prince, Bessie Hordes, Ralph Bernstein and Reuben Honigman.
JUNIOR HADASSAH ENDS SEASON
The Borough Park group of Junior Hadassah is planning a theatre party at “The Milky Way” on the evening of May 28. This is the last of their season’s activities, under the direction of the Misses S. Cohen and M. Etkin.
