A call for the convening in New York of a world conference of Yiddish schools–the first parley of the kind ever scheduled–was issued here today by the Congress of Jewish Culture and three organizations that maintain Yiddish schools in the United States.
Invitations, according to the sponsors, have been sent to Yiddish schools throughout the United States as well as in Canada, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, France, South Africa and Australia. The co-sponsoring organizations in the United States are the Sholem Aleichem Folk Institute; the I.L. Peretz Schools of the Workmen’s Circle; and the Folk Schools of the Zionist labor movement.
One of the chief purposes of the conference, to be held May 6-10, will be the coordination of Yiddish-school textbooks, teacher training, and the furthering of communal financial aid to Yiddish schools. Other topics will include “Yiddish-Hebrew bilingualism,” and the improvement of curricula.
