The deficit of the Youth and Hechalutz Department of the World Zionist Organization has reached $2.7 million, department head Avraham Katz reported yesterday, Katz said the deficit was caused by inflation and other elements which the department had no control over. He said efforts should be made to cover this deficit.
He explained that the department would have to cut some 20 percent of its budget and therefore, for the first time, there would be no subsidies for the thousands of overseas youth who come to Israel for summer projects of the Youth Department. Moreover. the department will have to cut down on the number of its emissaries overseas and use instead foreign graduates of the Institute for Overseas Guides after they return to their countries of origin. The youth movements will be asked to use joint emissaries.
