JERUSALEM (JTA) — A teenage Palestinian medic was shot and killed during an Israeli military raid on a refugee camp near Bethlehem, the Palestinian media are reporting.

The confrontation took place on Wednesday morning, when Israeli forces entered the Dheisheh camp to make arrests. Several Palestinian residents were injured in clashes with the soldiers, and local paramedics were called in to help them, the Palestinian Wafa news agency reported.

Sajed Mizher, 17, was wearing a reflective paramedic vest when he was shot in the stomach with a live bullet, according to Wafa.

The Israel Defense Forces has not commented on the teen’s death, but confirmed on Wednesday to Haaretz that it was active in the area and used riot control methods only to respond to the Palestinians throwing firebombs and rocks.

Palestinian Authority Health Minister Jawad Awad called Mizher’s death a “war crime which shows the Israeli military’s insistence on violating all international treaties and conventions on protection of paramedics during times of conflict.”
