Ely Bernays, retired grain merchant, for twenty five years a member of the Produce Exchange died Monday of complications following an appendicitis operation.

Bernays came of a very distinguished family. He was a grandson of the great Jewish scholar Isaac Bernays. His widow, Anna, is a sister of the world renouned psychologist Sigmund Freud.

For years Mr. Bernays was active in Jewish philanthropic work. He was for some time an officer of the Hebrew Sheltering Guardian Society.
