Dutch Rabbi Protests to Greek Government Against Compulsory Sunday Closing Law in Salonika

Chief Rabbi Onderwyzer has sent a telegram to the Greek Government in which he writes:

“We have heard with anxiety of the passing of a compulsory Sunday observance law for Salonika. To keep two days of rest in the weekis on economic grounds impossible for most people. The enforcement of Dunday closing, therefore, will compel large numbers of the Jews to violate their own day of rest. We trust that the feeling of justice of the Greek Government will respond to our request and that facilities will be given to the Jewish population to observe their Sabbath.
