Jewry all over the world finds itself in an hour of greatest need, declared Dr. Hertz in his message issued on the occasion
of Rosh Ha’shona.
“Our emigrant brethren, fleeing from famine, racial hatred and religious fanaticism, find the doors of the United States closed to them. The masses of our brethren are again scattered to the four winds. Even in strange, distant lands, the Latin-American countries, the only countries open for our refugee brethren, grave religious dangers await the newcomers. In these countries there is no organized Jewish life, only Marranoism is to be found. Often, the earlier Jewish settlers have totally abandoned Judaism.
“The general outlook on the situation of the Jews sharpens our vision to the supreme task which faces our people,” Rabbi Hertz concludes.
