The fate of a childless Jewish widow who has to submit to the ancient ceremonies of “Chalitzah” before she can remarry, as well as the fate of the great number of Jewish women in eastern Europe who have lost track of their husbands during the war, classified as “Agunoth” was the subject of editorial comment by the local Yiddish paper “Togblatt”.
The paper urged the Rabbis to take into consideration the extraordinary circumstances following the war and pogrom period.
The suggestion of the newspaper, however, displeased the Rabbis who, indignant at the attack on the ancient Jewish law, proclaimed a ban against the paper.
