Dr. Zevi Chajes was the first Chief Rabbi of Vienna who not only confessed to be a Zionist but from the pulpit and in innumerable meetings propagated the Zionist idea. His courageous stand for Zionism has been one of the most important factors in creating a strong Zionist feeling in Vienna. He has gained an international reputation by his scholarly attributes and his intense Zionist activities and has frequently been delegated to international Jewish conventions where he represented the Austrian Zionists and the Vienna Jewish community. As the chief rabbi of the second largest Jewish community of Europe, Dr. Chajes’ conspicuous Zionist activities have contributed to the strong position Zionism has acquired in European Jewish life in the last decade. Before coming to Vienna Dr. Chajes was Chief Rabbi of Trieste.
