Contributions to the $6,000,000 United Jewish Campaign in New York has reached a total of $4,002,050. The sum was given by 10,000 contributors. In the last Jewish relief campaign in New York 82,000 persons contributed. This, Mr. Felix M. Warburg stated before the campaign workers rally at the Hotel Biltmore, leaves 72,000 still to be heard from. Brooklyn contributed $628,000 to the total and the women’s division, $300,000. Far Rockaway reported contributions of $72,000 more than its quota of $100,000. Among the larger contributions announced were: Temple Emanu-El, $30,000; Michael Friedsam, $25,000; Bricken Construction Company, $15,000; Mount Neboah Congregation, $13,563; Carl Laemmle, $10,000; Otto Kahn, $10,000 and Mr. and Mrs. Philip Lehman, $7,500 and $5,000 each from Robert Lehman, Mr. and Mrs. Harold M. Lehman, Arthur Lipper, Max Weinstein, Morris White, William J. Wellman, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Prince, Max Lowenstein and Levy & Baird.
Mayor James J. Walker, speaking before a meeting of the Grand Street Boys’ Association Tuesday night, appealed to them and to the citizens of New York City to respond to the $6,000,000 United Jewish Campaign, declaring that never in his life had he heard of a cause that deserved and required help so much as the effort that is being made by the Jews of America to bring speedy relief to the millions of their destitute co-religionists overseas.
Judge Max Levine who had previously pledged the Grand Street Boys to a $50,000 contribution announced that on Judge Otto A. Rosalsky’s motion, the quota was increased to $100,000. Judge Levine presided at the meeting.
Judge Otto A. Rosalsky and Judge Gustave Hartman also addressed the meeting.
Some of the larger contributions were: Isidore Gainsburg, $5,000; Grand Street Boys’ Association treasury, $3,000; Edward Margolies, $3,000; J. D. Bookstaver, $2,500; “Amen Boys” of the Grand Street Boys’ Association, $2,500; Employees of J. D. Bookstaver, $3,042; Mr. and Mrs. Jonah J. Goldstein, $2,500; Witty Bros., $1,000; Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Grand Street Boys, $1,000; Henry Sobel, $1,000; H. Weiser, $500; Minsky Bros., $500; Dr. S. Davidson, $500; Jacobi & Levine, $500; Karp, Markowitz & Perlman, $250; Manny Keiser, $300; Ed. Bokal. $300; Jacob Finkelstein, $300.
Two non-Jewish members were among the contributors: Magistrate McCreery and Peter Hammel, $250 each.
