A protest against the examination of Sholom Schwartzbard’s mental condition was made by his attorney, Henri Torres. Schwartzbard declared that he acted with full knowledge and that he has assumed full responsibility, his attorney stated.

When interviewed by the correspondent of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, M. Torres declared that he alone will conduct the defense of Schwartzbard. “My defense will be more in the nature of a prosecution.” he said. “I will accuse the world-wide criminal, anti-Semitic movement. I shall defend Schwartzbard who is my brother Jew and who was my brother-in-arms with all my strength and faith.

“I cannot prophecy what will be the verdict of the jury, but I have great confidence in French justice and the conscience of the French people,” he declared.

The trial preliminaries will take four to five months, it was stated.
